Where to Stay in New York

New York City is enormous, so if you truly want to “see it all,” you’ll need to pack for a lengthy trip. Most visitors stay in Manhattan because of its close proximity to NYC’s most famous sights, but incredible New York hotel deals can be found in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

If you’re looking for convenience and luxury, start your hotel search in Midtown Manhattan. It includes posh neighborhoods like Chelsea and the Theater District, and famous sites like Times Square and the United Nations Building. Midtown’s Union Square is also the subway hub for the entire city.

Uptown Manhattan features numerous museums like the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Central Park is at the heart of all the action. Downtown, in addition to its boutique loft hotels, is home to the Financial District, memorials at Ground Zero and dozens of delectable restaurants in neighborhoods like Chinatown and Little Italy.

If you don’t mind taking the subway to Manhattan and are seeking lower rates, the outer boroughs offer accommodations ranging from economical to swanky. These areas have their own excellent attractions, like Coney Island, the Bronx Zoo and Citi Stadium, home of the Mets.

New York Hotel Tips

New York City is an expensive destination for tourists, and its hotels, particularly those in Manhattan, are no exception. Midtown’s finer hotels’ most modest accommodations often run several hundred dollars per night, with nightly rates for luxury suites routinely reaching upward of $2000. But if you’re willing to spare no expense, some of the nation’s best hotel experiences are attainable on this island.
Of course, you don’t have to be a big spender to enjoy even a long vacation in NYC. Cheap hotel options can be found all over the city, and travelers who do their research can even secure discount rates on hotels with relatively luxurious amenities. And if you’re traveling on a very tight budget, hostels provide simplistic but cheap rooms to help you save.

New York Hotel Recommendations

If you’re looking for one of the swankiest and most modern hotel experiences in Gotham, make your reservations at The Mercer in SoHo. Its 75 loft-style dwellings are outfitted with the latest electronics, impeccable interior design and impressive perks like fireplaces and expanded marble baths. For luxury accommodations at somewhat more competitive rates, the Sofitel New York sits right around the corner from Rockefeller Center and features a sophisticated French restaurant, a modern fitness center and sleek styling throughout.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel, in downtown’s Tribeca neighborhood, delivers an ideal balance of location, quality and affordability. The short walk to the financial district, wide variety of room types and amenities like free wireless Internet make this a smart choice for budget travelers. You can also save at the Inn on 23rd, a Chelsea bed and breakfast where all rooms are individually appointed and breakfast is prepared daily by students of New School University’s culinary program.

New York Transportation

After your flight to New York touches down, you’ll need to get to your hotel. Stroll right past the rental car kiosks; driving in New York is inefficient and often nerve-wracking, and parking is even worse. Instead, opt for a cab. Rides to Manhattan from JFK are a flat $45, not including tolls and tip. From Newark, cabs also offer flat rates between $30 and $40, and rides from LaGuardia are metered and usually cost under $30 to Manhattan locations. Alternatively, you can make reservations with a private car service in advance, often at rates competitive with the cab companies.
Once in Manhattan, traveling by foot is often the most efficient means of transportation, particularly during midday. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and for longer distances, lean toward the subway rather than cabs or buses, which can get stuck in traffic. MTA information centers are located at most stations, where you can pick up system maps, buy fare cards and ask questions. At night, when traffic is lighter and the subway can be more intimidating, taking a cab may be a more attractive alternative.
