Where to Stay in Milan

Milan is one of the cultural capitals of the world. The northern Italian city is a hub for fashion, commerce, cuisine and architecture. From the stunning Gothic-style Duomo that has come to represent the city to the upscale fashion houses of the Fashion Quadrangle, Milan has plenty to offer travelers of all tastes. Because Milan is known for its luxuries, it's no surprise that the city boasts some of the most exclusive hotel options in Europe. You can find four- and five-star hotels throughout central Milan. This historical district features many of the city's top tourist attractions, including the world-famous Teatro alla Scala opera house and the Museo Poldi Pezzoldi, an internationally acclaimed private art museum. Or search for mid-range and luxury hotels in the northern Mirabello district. This neighborhood provides visitors with easy access to the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Milan's premier art museums. The acclaimed institution is well known for its vast collection of Italian works. The district is also near Corso di Porta Venezia, one of the finest streets in Milan. Here, you can stroll through the Giardini Pubblici, an old garden park. Inside the park are the city's Natural History Museum and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, which houses many examples of 19th century Italian art. Or compare hotels northwest of the city center. This area is easily accessible by public transportation and features a cluster of comfortable accommodations.

Milan Hotel Tips

As one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan plays host to two annual Fashion Weeks. The first Fashion Week is held February or March, while the second is held in September or October. During these events, the world's most famous designers descend on the city to show off their new collections. Because of the events' international popularity, hotel rooms can be scarce. If you are planning on visiting during one of Milan's Fashion Weeks, make sure to book hotel reservations very far in advance. Also, hotel prices for these weeks are significantly higher, so it is not necessarily an ideal time to visit for budget travelers.

Because Milan sports a Mediterranean climate, its summers can get pretty hot. July and August are the hottest months, seeing temperature ranges of the 60s to the 80s. Although the heat may keep some tourists away, it is one of the best times to find Milan flight deals and cheap hotels. Hotels and flights are also frequently more affordable during the wintertime, outside of holiday season. If you want to experience the height of Milan's tourist season, consider a trip during the springtime or early fall. Rooms do quickly, so make hotel reservations early.

Milan Transportation

Milan is the most important railway hub in Italy after Rome. Travelers can catch one of two high-speed trains that provide transport to such Italian communities as Naples, Florence and Bologna. Within the city, travelers can ride one of the many modes of transportation provided by Azienda Transporti Milanesi (ATM). The public company provides 17 tramlines and more than 100 bus routes and operates. It also operates the Milan Metro, the city's subway system, which features three lines that cover 56 miles.
