Where to Stay in ManchesterDespite the overwhelming size of Greater Manchester, its urban core, known as City Centre, spans just over one square mile. This area contains the majority of the city’s hotel accommodations, as well as dozens of Manchester’s top attractions, restaurants and shops. Because City Centre is so compact and public transportation is so comprehensive, you can choose virtually any hotel in the area with the confidence that sightseeing and exploring will be convenient. However, distinctive neighborhoods add diversity and character within City Centre, so you may want to stay where the surroundings seem most appealing to you. The northern neighborhood of Millennium Quarter is among the most modern and architecturally stunning in the city, and nearby St. Ann’s Square is a major destination for boutique shopping. If you prefer a more historic setting, Castlefield on the West Side may be more to your liking. To the east, you’ll find a much different environment in the flourishing Chinatown. Though you can generally find cheap hotel deals in Manchester in the City Centre neighborhoods, the most affordable options tend to be smaller and modestly appointed. You can find bigger rooms and better amenities at discount rates by looking beyond City Centre in Manchester’s sprawling outer suburbs. Manchester Hotel TipsLike most major metropolitan centers in England, Manchester’s selection of hotels includes a little bit of everything. Hostels, budget motels and small inns constitute the most affordable choices, followed by mid-level hotels that span a range of price points and five star properties that can make your stay extra special. Manchester’s hotel scene is set apart in terms of price, however, from London and other South England cities. In general, it’s much more affordable to stay in Manchester, so consider looking for rooms and amenities that are slightly more luxurious than what you might choose when visiting pricey London.
Manchester Hotel RecommendationsYou can stay in what is arguably Manchester’s most recognizable building, the ultra-modern Beetham Tower, by booking a room at the Manchester Hilton Deansgate. The hotel occupies only a portion of the 47-story skyscraper, but everything has a spacious and comfortable feel, from the guest rooms to the common areas. Don’t miss Cloud 23, the hotel’s sleek cocktail lounge with unbeatable views of the city. Ambitious sightseers who don’t plan on sticking around their hotel will find a great value in The Ox, a small and simple guest house attached to a popular gastro-pub. Less than a half hour’s walk from most of City Center’s attractions, The Ox’s rooms are comfortable and the downstairs pub makes a convenient option for grabbing a bite or a brew before retiring for the evening. Manchester TransportationDuring the day, it’s safe and easy to get around Manchester on foot, which is a great way to get in some quality sightseeing in-between destinations. But if you want to get around faster or give your feet a break, you can get almost anywhere in City Centre or Greater Manchester by taking a bus or streetcar. More than 50 independent bus operators serve the area, and while this can be somewhat confusing, major transit hubs like Manchester Piccadilly Station have handy pamphlets that detail routes and schedules for them all. This is also where you can purchase unlimited ride passes that cover multiple transit companies, allowing you to travel for less. Among the bus lines, Metroshuttle is a favorite of savvy tourists because rides are free all day and routes cover the busiest sections of City Centre. After your flight to Manchester arrives, you can travel straight to Manchester Piccadilly Station by rail. Following the 20-minute trip, you can easily transfer to a bus or streetcar, finish your journey on foot or catch a cab at a taxi stand. Taxis are affordable and plentiful throughout City Centre. |
