Where to Stay in Malaga

Located on Spain's Mediterranean coast, which is known locally as the Costa del Sol, Malaga has the distinction of being the southernmost metropolis in Europe. Here, travelers can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, sample authentic local cuisine, tour amazing historical sites and visit the birthplace of artist Pablo Picasso. No matter what draws you to Malaga, you can be certain to find a conveniently located hotel that meets your budget. If you are planning on spending much of your vacation sunbathing along the coast, consider one of the luxury hotels near La Malagueta. This urban beach is centrally located near many of the city's top cultural attractions, including the ruins of the Roman theater and the 8th-century Moorish fortification known as Alcazaba. If you wish to be near some of the best shopping in Malaga, search for affordable accommodations west of the city center near the port. This area is home to a number of shopping districts, including Mercado de Atarazanas, Mercado del Carmen and Malaga Plaza. For those that are fans of Picasso, compare hotel rates near the Picasso Museum. Just a few hundred feet away from the gallery, is the Plaza de la Merced, the artist's birthplace, which exhibits artifacts from his childhood. If you'd rather get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, consider one of the many resorts, hostels and inns located along the Costa del Sol.

Malaga Hotel Tips

Malaga plays host to several major festivals throughout the year that celebrate the culture and religion of its people. One of the largest festivals is the August Malaga Fair. During this celebration, the city's streets are transformed into symbols of Spanish culture and history. A wide array of entertainment, including food, music, dancing and a carnival, ensure that all participants thoroughly enjoy themselves. If you plan on attending the festivities, you will want to book hotel reservations months in advance. Likewise, if you are planning on traveling any time during the peak tourist season, which lasts from about April through October, you should search for affordable hotels well ahead of time.

If you would rather avoid the throngs of European sunbathers, consider a trip to Malaga during the winter. From November through March, the tourist season tapers off. Although the weather isn't necessarily warm enough to lie out on the beach or swim in the azure ocean waters, you can still patron the city's dozens of culturally and historically significant sites. In addition, you can frequently find Malaga flight deals and discount hotel rooms during this period.

Malaga Hotel Recommendations

Stay in four-star luxury by booking reservations at the Molina Lario hotel. The hotel is conveniently located in the center of town near Malaga Park and the Cathedral of Malaga. This exclusive boutique is housed within several buildings, two of which were recently refurbished and date back to the 19th century. The hotel boasts 103 rooms, each outfitted with contemporary decor and modern amenities. Room options include classic, deluxe, superior and suites. The hotel also claims an exquisite garden terrace. Here, guests can enjoy a cup of coffee or a small bite from the hotel's on-site cafe. During the summer, the terrace welcomes live musical performances. The hotel's eighth floor is home to the Piscina Lounge, a swank hangout that serves cocktails and tapas.  There is also a rooftop swimming pool and solarium.

Or book reservations at the Room Mate Lola, located just a little west of the city center. This posh establishment features 50 sleek and stylish rooms that sport a sophisticated urban feel. All rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, including complimentary Internet, flat-screen televisions and air conditioning. The hotel also offers guests a breakfast buffet, a relaxing outdoor reading area and complimentary fruit upon check-in. Major attractions, including the Picasso Museum and the beach, are only a short walk away. Because of its location outside the city's center, rates tend to fall more in the middle range, making it an ideal hotel for travelers on a budget.

Get as close to La Malagueta as you can get by booking rooms at the Hotel Ms Maestranza. This four-star property is located near the bullfighting arena and is a mere 110 yards from the beach. Recently renovated, the 13-story hotel boasts 102 guestrooms. In-room furniture is designed to replicate the same decor Pablo Picasso had in his apartment. Accommodations are clean, welcoming and comfortable. The facility also claims a restaurant that specializes in Mediterranean fare. Because it relies on fresh local ingredients, its menu rotates seasonally. Additionally, all guests can take advantage of the complimentary breakfast buffet as well as the hotel's top-floor spa and solarium. Massage services are available at an additional cost. Those traveling on business can reserve one of Hotel Ms Maestranza's meeting rooms for conferences and special events.

Malaga Transportation

If you plan on restricting your visit to central Malaga, you can tour most of the top attractions on foot. The urban beach, the Picasso Museum and the Alcazaba are all within reasonable walking distance of one another. If you plan on heading outside of Malaga to a nearby town, you can hop aboard the Cercanias Malaga, a commuter rail service. There is also separate rail service to other major Spanish cities, including Madrid and Barcelona. Malaga also operates a network of buses that provide transport throughout the city. Travelers can also rent cars from the handful of rental agencies that operate within the city.
