Where to Stay in La Paz

La Paz has a neighborhood to suit your tastes and your budget. Whether you're looking for an affordable backpack retreat or an upscale stay near swank lounges and clubs, you will find a hotel for you. Business travelers may want to compare rates in the Prado, La Paz's city center and the main commercial district. Most of Bolivia's major banks and corporations have headquarters along Camacho Avenue in this area. There is also a second commercial hub in La Paz's Southern District. This affluent area is also a perfect destination for the discriminating traveler as it is home to many luxurious boutique hotels and high-end restaurants. Those looking for a cheap stay should look for inns and hostels along Sagarnaga Street. This area is known for its many cheap bars, shops and restaurants that are popular with the younger crowd. There are also a number of nice hotels in the Sopocachi and San Jorge neighborhoods, both of which are a short drive from the city's center and main cultural attractions. If you want to be near La Paz's main cultural attractions, look for accommodations near Casco Viejo. This old part of town is home to Bolivia's main government buildings and the popular Murillo Plaza.

La Paz Hotel Tips

The citizens of La Paz celebrate a number of festivals throughout the year. May through September is prime festival season, with many celebrations honoring saints and religious figures. In addition, these months are some of La Paz's driest, making it a great time to explore the natural areas surrounding the city. Because of the many seasonal activities and nice weather, you should search for hotel reservations in advance if you plan on visiting during these months.

If you're looking for some great deals, plan your trip during the city's off-season. From December to March, La Paz experiences a heavy rain season, with as much as 21 rainy days a month on average. However, the temperature is still comfortably warm, which means you may still be able to take advantage of outdoor activities. This is one of the best times to search for cheap flights to La Paz and hotel deals.

La Paz Transportation

La Paz is a very walkable city. Many of the metro area's top attractions are centered around the Prado downtown. Walking is also one of the best ways to browse La Paz's many shops and cafes that line the city's large and mid-sized plazas. If you'd rather give your feet a rest, hop on one of the many buses that serve the area. You can also catch a ride on a shared van, known as a mini bus or a shared taxi. Both drive along set routes clearly marked on the vehicles' windshields. If you'd rather not use public transportation, you can always hail a taxi. Because local cabs don't use meters, negotiate a set price with the taxi driver before taking your trip.
