Where to Stay in Flint

The decline of the auto manufacturing industry in Flint has forced many local businesses to close throughout the last few decades, including several of the city’s hotels. Most of those that remain, including virtually all of the hotels built since the early 1980s, are located in the immediate vicinity of Bishop International Airport.

The roughly one-dozen airport hotels are owned mostly by well-known hospitality chains, and they include both upscale properties and budget-friendly motels. This is a smart place to search for cheap hotel deals in Flint, as even the most luxurious accommodations are reasonably priced.

There are no hotels in the roughly square-mile area that comprises Downtown Flint, but a few hotels to the north and east are located within a mile or so. The nearest surrounding communities have comparatively fewer options, but they may be worth a look if you’re seeking an independent motel. These towns include Burton to the east, and Beecher and Mount Morris to the north.

Flint Hotel Tips

There are very few independent hoteliers in Flint, but national hotel brands are well-represented. Upscale accommodations include comfortable rooms from chains like Marriott, Wyndham and Hampton Inn. A few extended-stay hotels offer nice in-room amenities like full kitchens and wireless Internet access, and you can often secure lower nightly rates when staying for one week or longer.

A variety of discount motels also operate in the city, with several located just across I-69 from the airport. At comfortable but simple motels like these, it’s not uncommon to find nightly rates of less than $50.

Flint has one bed and breakfast inn, and though they’re few and far between, you can find some others within an hour’s drive of town. If you prefer a room with unique furnishings and personal touches, these intimate alternatives are great ways to add a little extra character to your Flint vacation.

Flint Hotel Recommendations

Unless you want to be positioned close to the airport to catch your flight back home, the hotel with the best location may well be the Holiday Inn Express on Robert T. Longway Boulevard. It’s just a short drive or a scenic walk from both Downtown Flint and the University of Michigan – Flint campus. Guests can choose from a variety of standard rooms and suites, and free perks include a daily hot breakfast buffet.

If you want in-room luxury features like two-person Jacuzzis and pull-out sofa sleepers, you’ll find them in the suites of the Wingate by Wyndham, situated a few miles south of Downtown Flint. If you need even more room, try Flint’s Residence Inn by Marriott. Its units include studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, all with full kitchens and separate areas for sleeping, living and dining.
A completely different experience awaits at the Avon House Bed & Breakfast, a large and fully-restored Victorian home furnished with period antique furniture. There are three guest rooms that each accommodate two people, and a full, fresh, hot breakfast is served every morning.

Flint Transportation

Although Flint does have a public transportation system, it’s not a particularly efficient way of exploring the city. The metro area is widely sprawled, and Flint’s MTA only runs buses once an hour throughout most of the day, which means lots of waiting for bus travelers.

Instead, plan to rent a car for the duration of your stay if you’re arriving by air. Several national car rental agencies maintain a presence at Flint’s Bishop International Airport, so you can rent a vehicle immediately after your flight to Flint arrives. The city’s road layout is logical and easy to navigate, and traffic in Flint is rarely congested.

Taxis are available, but they rarely patrol for fares. If you need a cab, ask your hotel’s front desk staff to call one for you or make ride recommendations. If you’re staying in Downtown Flint, take some time to explore the immediate area on foot when the weather is nice.
