Where to Stay in Cape Town

Cape Town is such a popular tourist destination that you may be overwhelmed with the number of lodging options. The bustling metropolis claims a range of accommodations, from low-priced backpacker hostels to luxurious five-star hotels. There are also many intimate bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and inns to choose from. If you are traveling for business, you'll want to stay in Cape Town's central business district, located in a large region known as the City Bowl. This downtown area serves as the city's economic center and the nation's political heart. Here, you can view the Edwardian-style Cape Town City Hall or pay a visit to the South African National Gallery, which features an extensive collection of South African art. Or search for exclusive boutiques in the affluent neighborhood of Clifton. Located west of the city center, this coastal community is home to some of the finest beaches in all of Cape town. If outdoor adventure is what you're after, then book reservations at one of the resorts and inns in Cape Town's south suburbs. Communities like Simon's Town provide travelers with convenient access to the nearby Table Mountain National Park and the exotic Boulders beach, which is home to a large colony of penguins. If you're a fan of wine, head northeast of Cape Town to the outer community of Cape Winelands. This off-the-beaten-path area is South Africa's wine country. If you want to stay in a trendy part of town, compare rates at the many accommodations in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Situated on the slopes of Signal Hill, the multicultural district features quaint cobblestone streets and colorful houses.

Cape Town Hotel Tips

Cape Town is the most popular tourist destination in Africa. As such, it can get pretty crowded during its summer, which last from about November through February.  During this peak season, temperatures top the 80-degree mark, and the city's beaches see a dramatic influx of tourists and locals. This is usually the most expensive time to visit, so travelers should prepare to search for affordable accommodations months in advance to ensure availability.

Prices begin to drop as the summer peak season ends. Travelers looking to enjoy the sunny weather but beat the crowds should book reservations during the months of April through June. Temperatures are likely to drop a bit, making beach going difficult on cooler days. But hiking, shopping and sightseeing are all still popular activities. Plus, you can often find the best Cape Town flight deals and hotel rates around this time. You can also travel during the lowest tourist season of all, which lasts from about July through September. This wet season sees a lot of wind and rain. However, it is often the least costly time to see the city.
