Charleston, S.C., is a city I’ve always wanted to visit and some great flight deals afforded me the opportunity to check it out. I met up with a group of friends from all over the country, and we rented a house on the Isle of Palms. We planned our trip a couple weeks ahead of Charleston’s peak travel season so we were able to get a discount not only on the airfare but on the rental house on the beach as well.
The flight from San Francisco to Charleston is of course not a short journey, but I was lucky that my Delta flights on the way there and my United flights on the return trip were all seamless. That definitely contributed to a relaxing trip.
As soon as I landed I took a cab into downtown Charleston and headed to one of their famous rooftop restaurants, The Library. My first meal was a Southern classic, pulled barbeque beef -- I couldn’t take a trip all the way to South Carolina without getting some BBQ! There was also a live band, and the weather was perfect for a night outdoors.
Waking up the following morning to sunshine and 80 degree weather made for a perfect beach day. Lining the shore were cute houses intermingled with open-air bars filled with vacationers. There was a mix of families and kids along with younger travelers in town for bachelor and bachelorette parties on the beach.
We decided to splurge for dinner and hired a personal chef to come to the house to make a feast. He brought all the ingredients, cooked appetizers, salads and entrees, and then cleaned the kitchen before heading home (leaving a chocolate cake on the counter for later).
On our last night in Charleston, we headed downtown to Cru Café for some great seafood and then an evening at Social Wine bar.
I’ll definitely be returning to Charleston for some more gorgeous weather and delicious meals!
Travelzoo Tip: Plan to rent a car rather than relying on expensive cabs. Not only would it save money but there is a lot to explore between the beaches and downtown area that makes a car a necessity in this town.
