Honeymooning in Tortola was a dream come true! Jeff (my former fiancée and now husband) and I had been shopping around for a relaxing beach destination when we came upon the Long Bay Beach Resort deal in Top 20. Neither of us had ever heard of the island of Tortola, which piqued our interest even more because we wanted something really special and unique -- not a cookie cutter honeymoon trip. I have to say that we really lucked out in finding this gem. I think Tortola, and all of the British Virgin Islands will be a place that we return to for years to come.
Travelzoo Tip: The Long Bay Beach Resort, hidden away on a 52-acre Tortola estate, is now available for more than 50% off for stays through June.
Our wedding was on a Saturday, and we left for Tortola on Monday morning. Tortola does have an airport on the island, but it’s very expensive to fly into. After perusing TripAdvisor reviews for the resort, some travelers recommended flying into St. Thomas, which is a U.S. Virgin Island, and then taking a short ferry ride to Tortola -- which is what we ended up doing and it was a wonderful experience. The ferry ride takes about 40 minutes, and it felt incredible to be on a boat in the sunshine rushing through the turquoise water. Because Tortola is a British Virgin Island you must go through customs at the ferry dock upon arrival. From there, it was just a short taxi ride to the resort.
Our accommodations were upgraded to a beach-front condo. The view from our patio was stunning! We enjoyed Champagne on the beach and watching the sunset over the water. Very romantic! Most of the travelers staying at the resort were couples, but there were a few families there as well. We met one couple who was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and another celebrating their 60th! Both couples said they’ve been coming to Tortola, and specifically the Long Bay Beach Resort, for 20+ years, which is a fantastic endorsement.
Tortola offers a wide variety of things to do (or not do). We did our fair share of lying on the beach, but we also took a day trip to the island’s main town, Road Town. This is the place to go for shopping on the island. It was an interesting culture shock for us (for example, Cheez-Its cost $9 at the grocery store). Our favorite day was a snorkeling excursion that we took from the resort. We visited several “desert islands” that are only accessible by private boat. We would anchor the boats and swim to the shore. My favorite was “Sandy Cay” which was privately owned by a Rockefeller until 2008. It’s a tiny island with no structures on it, just a beautiful white sand beach and palm trees. We also swam into the famous “Soggy Dollar Bar” on the island of Jost Van Dyke. This bar is famous for inventing the cocktail called a Painkiller that consists of dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and orange juice then is topped with freshly grated nutmeg. The challenge is that you have to swim to shore, enjoy some drinks and then swim back to your boat!
Overall this was the perfect relaxing honeymoon Jeff and I were looking for. We owe a big thank you to Travelzoo for introducing us to this destination. I only wish we could have stayed longer!
