Take a 4- and 5-Star Beach Getaway in Europe

Summer is winding down, and it’s time to plan the season’s last big vacation. Trying to decide between a trip to the beach or a European adventure? Combine the two and enjoy the last rays of sunshine around Europe for as much as 75% off summer rates. Most visitors pack up their beach bags well before leaving plenty of space to relax at the continent’s coastal towns -- and resorts.

Cannes, France: InterContinental Carlton Cannes ... $232 (164 EUR) October/$301 (213 EUR) September (Reg. $899)

Built in 1911, the hotel has hosted actors and directors, including Grace Kelly and Sean Connery. Take a free shuttle to Île Sainte-Marguerite to visit the fortress that once held the Man in the Iron Mask or stroll along La Croisette to the Palais des Festivals, home of the Cannes Film Festival. See over 500 of the Mediterranean’s finest yachts and sailboats at the Festival de la Plaisance de Cannes (Sept. 6-11).

Ibiza, Spain: Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel... $230 (163 EUR) October/$281 (199 EUR) September (Reg. $401)

After three decades of parties, this hotel -- on the notoriously hedonistic Spanish island -- was revamped in May. Fun fact: The pool was the set for Wham!’s Club Tropicana video. Choose from 35 themed cocktails at the poolside bar before heading to Freddie’s Discotheque, named for rocker and former guest Freddie Mercury, where the DJ spins house music 24/7. September stays include complimentary live show tickets for Wednesday-night guests.

Algarve, Portugal: Porto Bay Falésia Hotel... $99 October/$176 September (Reg. $248)
This modern 4-star property on a cliff over the Praia da Falésia in Portugal's most popular beach city. In addition to more than 125 miles of beaches, Algarve is relatively inexpensive for travelers. Travelzoo Tip: Take the $14 (£10) private boat trip to Lagos from the hotel for unbeatable views of the sea cliffs.

Varna, Bulgaria: Melia Hotel Grand Hermitage... $87 (62 EUR) October/$92 (65 EUR) September (Reg. $347)

While Varna is the “Summer Capital of Bulgaria,” we'd still argue it's a great spot in the fall. At the city’s only 5-star property, rooms offer private balconies displaying the hotel’s private promenade leading to the golden sand beach and Black Sea. Grab a lounge chair on the beach for a midday nap, lunch poolside or relax in the hotel’s Turkish bath. Varna is known for some of the best all-night beach parties in Europe.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Dubrovnik Sun Gardens... $152 October/$203 September (Reg. $437)

Take in the sunset over the Adriatic Sea from a one-bedroom suite's private balcony. Just steps from a private beach, the 5-star hotel boasts 150 lounge chairs, tennis courts and a marina. A trip to Dubrovnik is incomplete without a walk along the ancient walls surrounding Old Town, offering visitors unparalleled views of the city and sea. Travelzoo Tip: Keep an eye out for a “Cold Drinks with the Most Beautiful View” sign leading through a hole in the castle wall. This passageway takes guests to Café Buza, where adventurous travelers take advantage of the drinks only menu before cliff-jumping into the Adriatic Sea.

Nice, France: Hotel Beau Rivage ... $164 (116 EUR) October/$197 (139 EUR) September (Reg. $478)

This historic resort is on the Promenade des Anglais, allowing guests to split time between beach cabanas and the shore-side shops of the French Riviera. Visit in September for the month-long Fête de la San Bertoumieu when winegrowers, artisans and farmers meet in Old Nice to sell their products.

Split, Croatia: Le Meridien Lav Split … $179 (120 EUR) October/$221 (180 EUR) September

This 5-star oceanfront hotel is ideally situated between sea and city, giving guests the opportunity to lounge on nearly 3,000 square feet of private beach or explore Croatia’s second largest city. Charter a sailboat from the hotel’s private marina for unsurpassed views of villages along the Dalmatian Coast. Take a break from the sun and visit Diocletian’s Palace in town. Completed in 305 AD, the fortress was transformed into a commercial and residential centre in the 7th century. English-language tours are available daily. For a more intimate experience, wander the ancient ruins at by moonlight, named the country’s most romantic midnight stroll by Croatian Traveler.
