Saturday is Passport Day

National Passport Day in the United States is this Saturday, Sept. 17, and if you’re one of the estimated 70% of the population without a passport, it’s the day to finally check that errand off your list. You can apply without an appointment at one of 26 passport agencies nationwide, but to shorten the wait times applicants are encouraged to fill out their paperwork ahead of time at the State Department’s website.

New adult passports are $135 while renewals are $110 (though these can be processed by mail which may be more convenient). Standard processing takes 4 to 6 weeks, or you can pay an expedite fee of $60 for processing of 2 to 3 weeks.

For the first-timer, you need to bring a color passport photo, evidence of your U.S. citizenship (birth certificate) and primary photo identification (driver’s license or state ID).
