New Urban Park in Santa Monica To Open Near Pier

In addition to the stretches of Pacific Ocean beaches, Los Angeles residents and visitors now have a new hangout in Santa Monica where the grass is greener.

Tongva Park, officially opening Friday, Oct. 19, features “hundreds of trees, four hilltop areas, and the aforementioned observation decks -- two of them -- offering terrific views of the ocean, pier and coastline” (Conde Nast Traveler). Formerly an abandoned parking lot, this 6.2-acre slice of green will host picnic tables, play forts for children and long winding paths accessible for bikers and pedestrians alike.

The opening ceremony 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. will host food trucks and art displays to celebrate Santa Monica’s newest flora and fauna. Tongva Park is located in Santa Monica’s Civic Center just east of Ocean Avenue at the Pacific Coast Highway in walking distance to the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier and the beach.
