No-cost opportunities abound to get out of the house and see some of America’s most treasured places on Saturday.
For outdoorsy types, it’s National Public Lands Day, a chance for volunteers to restore and tend to public spaces across the country. From coast to coast, most federal recreation sites will waive usage fees for people looking to pitch in and see the sights. Places as expansive as the Grand Canyon National Park and as small as the Carr Creek Lake in Sassafras, Ky., are all seeking help. Find a site here.
Saturday is also Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. Nearly 100 museums nationwide are participating in this event that offers free admission. Throw on your ruby slippers and see the largest privately owned collections of “Wizard of Oz” memorabilia at the Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas. Or tour a Classical Revival mansion and its manicured lawns at the Longue Vue House and Gardens in New Orleans. Popular museums involved include the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
