Madrid: Something for Everyone

When people think of Spain in the summer, they rarely consider anywhere other than the coast. Don’t ignore Madrid though -- it truly is a city with something for everyone.

If you’re a fan of Spanish food, Madrid is the place. From the Michelin-starred Ramón Freixa and the world-famous Casa Lucio to the small shops at Mercado de San Miguel (where you can sample local produce and tapas dishes), the variety is incredible.

In between meals, culture vultures can work up an appetite visiting the city’s museums -- there’s the Museo del Prado (the National Museum), el Museo de arte Thyssen-Bornemisza (open until 11 p.m. on Saturdays) and the Museo Reina Sofia, to name just a few.

If that sounds a little too high brow, you can always go shopping -- the city centre (Gran Vía and Plaza del Sol) is full of places to spend your euro. For something a little more individual, head to the Barrio de Salamanca (one of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods), where you’ll find plenty of trendy boutiques and designer outlets.

Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, Madrid is a great choice. For families, there’s the Parque del Retiro, where children can play and families and couples rent boats on the lake, or there’s the Parque Warner, a cartoon theme park close to Madrid and a perennial favorite with the kids.

Madrid’s nightlife is also legendary. The city is full of bars and nightclubs for all tastes, from house and hip-hop to Cuban dancing. For something more traditional, a Flamenco show such as Corral de la Moreria is always worth visiting.
