It's not often that an each-way fare costs less than a tank of gas. Thanks to new sales from Virgin America, Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, fares for late fall and early 2011 travel are as low as they've been in months. Today in particular is an excellent time to find and purchase a great fare.
Major carriers have matched many of the sale fares, which are as low as $30 each way on short flights and $99 cross-country. The travel windows vary by sale, but most include dates through mid-December and January through mid-February. The Christmas window (Dec. 17-31) is a consistent blackout period.
Travelers may be able to use these sales to fly around Thanksgiving, as long as the travel dates are flexible. For the best fares, avoid flying on Nov. 23, 24, 28 or 29.
