5 Top Tips for a Trip to Iceland

For a tiny country, Iceland packs quite a punch in terms of awe-inspiring scenery, one-of-a-kind adventures and intriguing cuisine.

Whether they involve a whale-watching tour or a trek to see the Northern Lights, Icelandic offers can be pretty tempting. Just ask the Travelzoo staff -- a number of us have booked trips to this Nordic country over the past few months.

Based on our collective experiences, here are some of our recommendations of things to see and do:

  • The Blue Lagoon -- Forget about the sulfur smell that will assail your nostrils as you drive up to this resort. It's worth trudging on as paradise awaits you in this outdoor bath, a pool of seawater naturally heated by geothermal activity. The womb-like warmth will relax you no matter what the air temperature. When I went, raindrops were falling on my head, but it didn't dampen the experience at all.
  • Book a day tour (for excursions such as the Golden Circle route and activities like glacier walking) with Reykjavic Excursions. Their coaches have free Wi-Fi on board, so you can stay plugged in no matter where you are.
  • If you're going to do the Northern Lights tour, book it for the first night of your trip. That way, if they cancel the excursion due to adverse weather, you still have other opportunities to see this natural phenomenon. Also, be sure to wear plenty of layers; remember, you're in a place with ice in its name.
  • Try the lobster soup down by the docks. Honestly, this could be the nicest thing you've ever done for your taste buds
  • If you're willing to try unique foods, recommendations include the tasting menu at Fish Market and Tapas. The latter has things like puffin and whale on the menu. Those wishing to go to the next level might want to keep an eye out for the Icelandic delicacy of rotten shark as well.
