San Francisco Opera kicks off its 2013-14 season with Boito's "Mephistopheles" and tickets are up to 50% off select performances. The retelling of Goethe's "Faust" is a work of "choral grandeur and melodic richness," according to The New York Times.

All tickets are 50% off for Tuesday-Thursday performances -- $16.50-$156 (reg. $33-$312) -- and more than 40% off the Saturday performance -- $40-$214 (reg. $75-$372) -- for the following dates:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Note: The $16.50 lead rate is available on the September 11 performance of “Mephistopheles.”  The other weeknight performances are Opera Vision performances with tickets starting at $21.50.

The tenor Ramón Vargas -- "in ravishing voice" (Financial Times) -- stars as the philosopher who sells his soul to the Devil, alongside the "luminous, compelling" (Washington Post) Patricia Racette as the woman he desires and “the seductively malevolent, full-bodied bass-baritone” (The New York Times) Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role.

Book by Sept. 26.
