Quick Travel Guide to Columbus

Columbus can be loosely divided into several districts. The city's commercial center, and a popular destination for business travelers, is its downtown district. Here, amid the city's cluster of skyscrapers, visitors can view the majestic Scioto River. The riverfront is a popular location for the city's annual festivals, including the annual Fourth of July celebration. The riverfront is also the site of a to-scale replica of the Santa Maria, a landmark that was constructed to commemorate the 500-year anniversary of Christopher Columbus' famous voyage.

Another popular downtown attraction is the Ohio Statehouse. Initially constructed in 1839, the Greek Revival-style building houses the Ohio General Assembly and the ceremonial offices of the state's executive branch. The Statehouse features many large-scale works of art within its walls and on the adjacent grounds. Families should spend a day visiting the downtown Center of Science and Industry, also known as the COSI. The museum features more than 300 interactive exhibits covering such topic areas as the oceans, outer space and biology.

Columbus' downtown is also the center of its fine arts scene. A handful of theaters call the city center home including the Palace Theatre and the Ohio Theatre, which hosts the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and BalletMet Columbus.

In the northern sector of downtown is the Arena District. Claiming a number of large sports and performance complexes, the neighborhood is a hotspot for tourists. Here, you will find the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, an indoor-outdoor concert venue that frequently plays host to large touring acts. The Arena District is also the site of the Nationwide Arena, home of the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team; the Greater Columbus Convention Center; and Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers minor league baseball team.

Another popular part of town is the University District, the nickname given to the area around the Ohio State University campus. Here, travelers can tour the Jack Nicklaus Museum, a 24,000-square foot facility dedicated to preserving the history of golf. It's also home to the Wexner Center for the Arts, one of the nation's top modern art museums. Because of its high population of university students, the University District is a great neighborhood for budget travelers. Many restaurants and bars offer regular specials to attract the local college crowd.
