Quick Travel Guide to Toronto

Toronto truly is an international city. With so many ethnicities represented, you can get a taste, both figuratively and literally, of many of the world’s cultures. Head to the historic Kensington Market in downtown Toronto. The district originated as a haven for immigrants. It now serves as one of Toronto’s top tourist attractions, thanks to the many artists, shops and cafes that have moved into the area. Head just west of Kensington Market and find yourself in Little Italy, where you can sample some of the best Italian fare in all of North America. Less than a mile away, you’ll find one of Toronto’s other ethnically rich neighborhoods, Chinatown. As one of the largest Chinatowns in North America, this district features a host of specialty shops and restaurants that specialize in exotic Far East offerings.

If you want to take in some of Toronto’s vibrant art scene, you’ll definitely want to make a stop at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Housed in a building that is itself a work of architectural art, the museum boasts the largest single collection of Canadian art in the world. It also houses works by several of art’s greatest masters, including Picasso, van Gogh and Degas.

For those interested in a different kind of museum, check out the Hockey Hall of Fame, located just south of Toronto’s downtown Financial District. The museum showcases a number of artifacts from throughout hockey’s history, including trophies and equipment. It also features interactive displays, such as a slap shot booth where visitors can try to score a goal against a computer-generated goaltender.

Although you might not associate Canada with summer fun, Toronto actually claims several gorgeous beaches. Head out to the Toronto Islands off the coast of the mainland and enjoy a day on Centre Island Beach or Ward’s Island Beach. If you don’t mind bearing it all, visit Hanlan’s Point Beach, which has an official clothing-optional section.
