Taipei is the financial, political and cultural center of Taiwan. Located between the Yangming Mountains and the Central Mountains, the bustling metropolitan area is actually an amalgamation of several cities, including Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung. Quick Travel Guide to Taipei

Begin your trip to Taipei by visiting some of the city's top cultural attractions. Head north of downtown to the Shilin district, a traditional neighborhood that boasts a number of internationally renowned museums. One of these acclaimed institutions is the National Palace Museum. This popular tourist attraction contains more than 600,000 pieces of ancient Chinese artifacts and artwork, making it one of the largest museums in the world.  Collections include examples of bronze work, paintings, jades, ceramics, calligraphy and pottery. Also in Shilin is the Taipei Astronomical Museum, which features interactive exhibits and an IMAX theater. Shilin is also the site of one of the largest markets in Taiwan. Open from early evening to well past midnight, the Shilin Night Market covers several city blocks and includes a food court where you can sample an assortment of local delights.

Or escape the clamor of the city by taking a trip to the far north district of Beitou. This area is the home of the Yangmingshan National Park. This expansive park covers the nearby mountain ranges and features many soothing hot springs. There are also more than a dozen hiking trails. If you're traveling with children, you may want to consider taking the Erzihping Trail. This one-mile unobstructed path features an ecological pond, gazebos, picnic areas and public restrooms.
