Quick Travel Guide to Singapore

Begin your exploration of Singapore by visiting the city's historic district. Known as Riverside, or the Civic District, this bustling downtown neighborhood was the center of the city's colonial culture. Here, along the Singapore River, you will find many of the city's government buildings as well as its main business district. Visit Singapore's largest museum, the Asian Civilizations Museum. This enormous museum features artifacts from throughout Asia's history with an emphasis on the Singapore culture. This area is also where you'll spot the Merlion, Singapore's official symbol. With the head of a lion and the body of a fish, this tall statute spouts water into the nearby river. If you're looking for a place to shop in the Civic District, head to the Funan DigitaLife Mall. This shopping center specializes in all kinds of electronics. If you're looking for something with more of a local flare, check out The Arcade, a small mall that consists of unique, locally owned stores.

After you've wandered around the Civic District, you probably have worked up a hunger. Head to the basement of the Raffles City Mall to Jason's Supermarket. This large, upscale food seller has a large selection of gourmet food items, including prepared foods you can eat on the go.

If you aren't all shopped out yet, venture to Orchard Road. Located just west of the city's Central Business District, this neighborhood is considered Singapore's main shopping district. Both sides of the street are lined with rows of shopping malls where tourists can buy anything from luxury handbags to souvenirs to Korean barbecue.

But there's more to Orchard Road than just shopping. Here, you'll also find the National Museum of Singapore. The museum highlights Singapore culture and includes four separate galleries that focus on food, fashion, film and photography respectively. You can also find Singapore hotel deals here.

Once the sun goes down, head to Singapore's Chinatown. Popular among tourists, this district is home to Singapore's most vibrant nightlife. Karaoke bars, lounges and dance clubs are plentiful. There are a number of upscale wine bars as well. Gay travelers will want to visit the adjacent neighborhood of Tanjong Pagar, Singapore's unofficial gay district. Here, you'll find an assortment of bars and clubs that cater to the gay community.
