Why Fly to Seoul?

Seoul is not only the largest city in South Korea, it's one of the largest cities in the world. Boasting a population of more than 10 million, the capital city is a major international hub for business, politics and culture. The city has a history that goes back for centuries, and many of its historical buildings remain. Popular tourist destinations include the Changdeokgung Palace, the Hwaseong Fortress and the Jongmyo Shrine, all of which are considered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Business travelers are drawn to the Asian metropolis because of its economic importance. Seoul plays a major role on the international business stage, serving as the home to such electronics giants as Samsung and LG. There are also numerous cultural institutions throughout the city. In fact, Seoul boasts more than 100 museums, including the National Museum of Korea, the National Folk Museum and the Seoul Museum of Art. There are even museums dedicated to such niche topics as food (the Kimchi Field Museum) and utensils (the Tteok & Kitchen Utensil Museum). Visitors looking to enjoy some of South Korea's natural beauty can experience the wilderness within the city limits. Seoul's heavily forested Namsan Park offers hiking as well as spectacular views of the cityscape. Shoppers will be delighted with Seoul's large selection of high-end fashion, while foodies can enjoy the unique flavors of the Far East. You can book discount hotel reservations throughout the city. Which Airlines Fly to Seoul?

The Incheon International Airport (ICN) is the main facility that serves the Seoul region. The large airport is a hub for Asiana Airlines and Korean Air. A few airlines provide direct flights from select U.S. departure cities. You can compare plane tickets from New York on Asiana Airlines and Korean Air. Both airlines also provide service from Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle. You can also buy airfare from San Francisco on United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. If you're traveling from Canada, search for affordable flights from Toronto and Vancouver on Air Canada and Korean Air.

Seoul Flight Tips

If you are having difficulty finding low-priced direct flights from the U.S., search for flights from international destinations. Specifically, you can find airfare from Tokyo on many international carriers. In fact, several Tokyo flights land at Seoul's other airport, the Gimpo International Airport (GMP). Carriers that fly to this airport from Tokyo include All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Japan Airlines and Korean Air.

Quick Travel Guide to Seoul

Begin your journey to Seoul by visiting the city's Jongno and Jung districts. These two historical areas of town are home to what are known as the "Five Grand Palaces." The palaces, which consist of the Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, Gyeongbokgung and the Gyeonghuigung, are all popular tourist destinations. The most popular palace is the Changdeokgung, which is set in a large park and is open to the public. Structures of interest include Donhwamun Gate, the centuries-old palace gate; Daejojeon Hall, which served as the queen's residence, and Geumcheongyo Bridge, the oldest bridge in Seoul.

Next, learn about Korean history with a trip to the National Museum of Korea. Considered the country's foremost museum of Korean history, the institution contains more than 220,000 pieces, approximately 13,000 of which are on display within its six permanent galleries. Exhibits focus on a number of areas such as archeology, history and fine art. Or visit the War Memorial of Korea in the Yongsan district. This museum-like memorial displays many war-related documents and memorabilia from the many conflicts Korea was involved in. The memorial's collection includes an outdoor weapons exhibition that includes about 100 large artifacts.

If you're traveling with family, take a day to visit one of Seoul's kid-friendly amusement parks. Lotte World contains the world's largest indoor theme park as well as an outdoor theme park, a manmade island, a luxury hotel, shopping malls and a folk museum. Another popular amusement park is Everland. Located in Yongin, this expansive park features numerous rides, a zoo and a water park.

Those looking to shop have no shortage of stores to choose from. One of the top places to browse for the latest fashions is Myeondong. This fashion district is home to many major Korean brands as well as a few international brands, such as Lacoste, Adidas and Uniqlo. If you're looking for luxury goods, head to Apgujeong. This swanky district features a variety of upscale retailers, including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

As for food and drink, Seoul is packed with bars and restaurants. South Korea lumps its eateries into several categories. Budget travelers may want to find a bunsik, which is a type of cheap bistro that serves tasty snacks for people on the go. Those looking for steak should seek out a kogijip, which literally translates to "meat house." For the Korean version of sushi, hit up a hoejip. These "raw fish houses" serve delicious cuts of fresh fish. Other popular cuisine includes Korean barbecue, soups and noodle dishes.
