Cheap Flights to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is one of the greatest hidden treasures of the U.S. Despite its reputation as a blue-collar steel mill town, the city is one of the most naturally beautiful urban areas in the country. Downtown, the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River. Scenic bridges provide access across this majestic, wide waterway. Located along a river valley, part of the city is heavily sloped, which adds to Pittsburgh's already interesting terrain. Ascend one of Pittsburgh's 700 sets of stairs to enjoy breathtaking views of the metropolis below. In addition, Pittsburgh boasts a thriving downtown cultural district. The 14-block area features a number of art galleries, theaters and restaurants. Head to the city's North Side district and visit the Andy Warhol Museum, the largest museum in the U.S. dedicated to a single artist. Or check out the city's East End, which claims a number of universities, shopping districts and family-friendly attractions. Because of its location on the cusp of the Northeast, the Midwest and the South, you can find cheap flights to Pittsburgh from a number of departure cities.

Quick Travel Guide to Pittsburgh

Begin your journey to Pittsburgh by taking a trip downtown. Here, where the three rivers meet, you can explore the city's cultural epicenter. Known as the Golden Triangle, the area is home to Point State Park, which serves as a major festival venue. Within the park, you'll find Pittsburgh's famous fountain, which sprays water up to 150 feet in the air. The Golden Triangle is also home to the Central Downtown Historic District. This area is home to some of Pittsburgh's most iconic buildings, including the turn-of-the-century Frick Building. The city's Cultural District boasts Pittsburgh's grandest theaters and performance halls. Visit the district's Wood Street Galleries, a two-story contemporary art gallery that highlights the works of international artists.

Next, visit the East End for some of the city's best shopping. Particularly, the neighborhood of Shadyside is known for its mix of large chain retailers and locally owned boutiques. You'll also find many of the city's major universities in this area, including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. Those traveling with children should check out the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, both of which are part of the same complex. Or visit Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Schenley Park. The Victorian-style greenhouse features 13 rooms filled with elaborate gardens.

If you want to scope out Pittsburgh's finest museum, head north of downtown. Take the kids to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, or see the stars at the Allegheny Observatory.
