Quick Travel Guide to Milan

Milan rivals every other international city when it comes to shopping options, historic monuments, acclaimed museums, fine restaurants and beautiful architecture. Begin your trip by exploring one of the city's most famous structures, the Milan Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. This absolutely breathtaking example of Gothic architecture features some of the most intricate exteriors in the world. Tourists are allowed onto the roof where they can get close up views of the church's spires and pinnacles. The church is more than just a place of worship; it's a virtual museum. The interior features marble sculptures, altars and sarcophaguses. Nearby, you can visit the Duomo Museum. The institution displays the 700-year history of construction of the famous cathedral.

Just south of the Duomo is the Royal Palace. This giant structure was the seat of Milan's government for centuries. Today, it serves as a cultural center and hosts frequent exhibitions.  A short walk west of the palace is the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a historic library and art gallery. The building itself dates back to the early 17th century and was once one of the finest libraries in the world. To this day, it houses many important documents, including manuscripts by Aristotle and fragments of the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The art gallery contains beautiful examples of Italian paintings and drawings.

Venture north a few blocks and visit the Teatro alla Scala, the world's most famous opera house. The large edifice was inaugurated in 1778 and has served as the site for many of Italy's greatest opera performances. Today, the theater is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, the La Scala Theatre Ballet and the La Scalla Theatre Orchestra.

Travel northwest of the opera house to see one of the greatest landmarks in Milan—the Sforza Castle. The gigantic structure was originally constructed in the 15th century and served as a royal residence. The interior of the castle features artwork by some of Italy's most well known artists, including ceiling paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. Today, the castle houses several museums. Visitors can tour the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, which includes works by such art-world legends as Michelangelo and Andrea Mantegna. Visitors can also explore the Museum of Ancient Art, the Furniture Museum, the Museum of Musical Instruments and the Applied Arts Collection, the Achille Bertarelli Print Collection and the Egyptian and Prehistoric sections of the Archaeological Museum.
