Located on the beautiful shores of Manila Bay, the bustling metropolis of Manila, which claims 20 millions residents, offers visitors an eclectic mix of Asian and Spanish culture. From the mid-16th century to the late 1800s, Manila fell under Spanish rule, which heavily influenced the city's architecture, culture, arts and cuisine. Today, tourists can witness this interesting mix of East meets West through centuries-old landmarks, churches and buildings that still stand today. The city is also home to a number of notable museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, which highlights Filipino arts and culture. One of the best places to take in the natural landscape of the city is the Baywalk, a promenade that provides panoramic views of the coastline. When the sun goes down, there's no shortage of nightlife. Visit the Ermita district and dance the night away at one of the neighborhood's many nightclubs. Or check out Malate, a funky bohemian neighborhood that's full of interesting boutiques, restaurants and bars. You can find cheap flights to Manila through Travelzoo's Supersearch.

Quick Travel Guide to Manila

Begin your trip to Manila by doing a little sightseeing. Intramuros is one of the most historical areas of the city. The name of this district literally translates to "within the walls," and refers to the part of the city that was within the walls of the Spanish fortress built centuries ago. This is the oldest part of the city, and it is here that you'll find the best examples of Spanish colonial architecture, from the surviving fortress walls to the ornate churches. The moat that used to surround the area has been filled and converted into a golf course.

Next, visit Rizal Park, an urban park located in the heart of Manila. Here, you can see one of the country's most prominent monuments, the Rizal Monument. The statue stands in honor of the national hero Jose Rizal, whose mausoleum rests nearby. Other sites at the park include a man-made lake that contains a replica of the Philippine islands, the National Museum of Filipino People, the Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion and the Chinese and Japanese Gardens.

If you're traveling with family, schedule a visit to the Manila Ocean Park. This large oceanarium features dozens of kid-friendly attractions. Here, you can walk through Asia's largest underwater viewing tunnel and observe 5,000 varieties of marine creatures. There are also regularly scheduled live shows at the park that feature the park's loveable pack of sea lions. And you will not want to miss the musical fountain show, a nighttime extravaganza that features stunning water and light displays.

For a taste of the exotic, visit the Binondo neighborhood, Manila's Chinatown district. Among the traditional Chinese architecture, you'll find Chinese herbal stores, restaurants and groceries. Tea drinkers will enjoy the nice selection of Chinese teahouses to choose from. At night, head to the happening neighborhood of Ermita. This popular tourist spot, thanks to its many sights and attractions, also has a very active nightlife. Here you can dance at one of the many area nightclubs or grab a cocktail at a cozy Filipino bar.
