Cheap Flights to Lisbon

Not only is Lisbon the capital city of Portugal, it is also known the world over as a center for fashion, entertainment, the arts, commerce and culture. Take a stroll through Baixa, Lisbon's downtown, and view the ornate architecture of Praca do Comerico, or Commercial Square. The famous square was the site of the royal palace until the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake destroyed it and much of the rest of the city.  Just north of the square, you will find Rua Augusta, a tourist-friendly district that's full of outdoor cafes and boutiques. For nightlife, head to Bairro Alto. This neighborhood is a popular destination for Lisbon's youth and features a host of shopping and entertainment options. Here, you'll find a variety of nightlife options that cater to various sub groups, from punk bars to gay clubs to reggae clubs. Or head to Belem, Lisbon's main historical district. This area is famous for the many explorers who departed from its shores. Today, many antiquities still stand, including the Torre de Belem, a famous fortified lighthouse. Quick Travel Guide to Lisbon

Lisbon is a mix of old and new. As one of the oldest cities in Europe, Lisbon features an abundance of historical sites and landmarks. Conversely, it also offers tourists some of the best contemporary shopping and dining experiences in the world.

Start your exploration of Lisbon by orienting yourself in the city's center, Baixa. Here, you will find two of the most significant sites in all of Lisbon, Commerce Square and Rossio Square. In Commerce Square, you will find the towering arch, completed in the 19th century, that connects the square to the popular Augusta Street. Like Commerce Square, Rossio Square also has a lengthy history that predates the 1755 earthquake. The open mall is adorned with a beautiful Portuguese mosaic, and the surrounding buildings all sport traditional Pombaline facades, a traditional architectural style of 18th century Portugal. In fact, some of the square's cafes and shops actually date back to the 1700s.

Next, head four miles west of downtown to Belem. This historical district is home to such attractions as the Jeronimos Monastery, a 450-year-old structure, which was originally built to honor explorer Vasco de Gama. In fact, the monastery still contains his tomb. Within the monastery, you will also find the National Archeological Museum and the Maritime Museum. You will also find a handful of other museums in the Belem district, including the Design Museum, the Electricity Museum and the Folk Art Museum, among others.

Shopping aficionados will want to visit the neighborhood of Chiado. This elegant district is known not only for its grandiose architecture but also for its mix of old and contemporary shops. Here, among the many cafes, you'll find bookstores, apparel stores and home furnishing stores. You will also find the Chiado Museum, which specializes in contemporary Portuguese art.

For a late-night outing, head north of Chiado to Bairro Alto. This popular nightclub district is the heart of Lisbon's city-dwelling youth population. Here, you'll find an eclectic choice of live music venues, swank lounges and dive bars.
