Why Fly to Kuala Lumpur?

When Kuala Lumpur was founded as a tiny mining village in the 1850s, no one could have predicted that it would grow to become one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most modern cities. But today, cheap flights to Kuala Lumpur depart daily from around the globe, carrying travelers who seek the city’s world-class luxury hotels, delectable cuisine, excellent shopping and stunning architecture.

Which Airlines Fly to Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), one of the busiest airports in Asia, is located just over 30 miles south of the city. The only nonstop flights available from the U.S. to Kuala Lumpur depart from Los Angeles with Malaysia Airlines. The roughly 50 other airlines with service to Kuala Lumpur offer flights mostly originating from cities throughout Asia and Europe. Apart from Malaysia Airlines, the carriers with the busiest schedules to the city include AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia and Saudi Arabian Airlines. Some of the most common connection points for indirect flights from the United States are Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Kuala Lumpur Flight Tips

It’s important to note that Kuala Lumpur International Airport has a Low Cost Carrier Terminal, which is separated from the main terminal by more than 12 miles of road. Affordable shuttles run regularly between the two terminals, but these rides take time, so be sure you confirm which terminal you’ll be using before you depart.

Quick Travel Guide to Kuala Lumpur

It’s difficult to fully grasp the grandeur of this fast-growing metropolis before you arrive in Kuala Lumpur, but when you find the city’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers looming overhead, you’ll know you’ve discovered a place unlike any other in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur is enormous, and its city center is constantly buzzing with the activity of its friendly locals and visitors from countries far and wide. It also has a modern appearance that borders on futuristic; when dramatically lit at night, the view of the Twin Towers is out of this world. If you arrive early enough, you can even score free tickets to the observation deck in the enclosed skybridge that connects the 41st and 42nd floors of each building.

As a relatively young city, Kuala Lumpur’s historic sightseeing opportunities are limited, but you will find ornate temples and mosques scattered throughout the area, including some that have been sites of worship since shortly after the city’s founding. Many of the oldest structures are located around Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square, the epicenter of activity on Malaysian Independence Day. Explore this central area to see the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, a turn-of-the-century edifice that now houses the nation’s Supreme Court, and the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, known for its brilliant Moorish design.

Of course, many visitors are attracted by the ubiquity of affordable five-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur, many of which have lavish spas and unique guest services. The city is also considered a major international shopping destination, whether you’re in the market for designer threads or pirated DVDs. And while you’re in the city, plan to eat well; Malaysian cuisine is at its finest in this trendy capital.
