Begin your exploration of Guatemala City with some sightseeing in Zone 1. This area is popular among tourists due to the many cultural and political landmarks that dot the zone. Visit the National Palace, with its manicured interior courtyards, decorative artwork, wall murals and a statue that commemorates the end of the nation's civil war. Tours of the grounds are offered throughout the day. If you're in Zone 1 on a Sunday, visit the Main Plaza, a busy square filled with people, music, art and food. Zone 1 is also home to the Teatro Nacional. This cultural center, which is housed in an artfully designed building, contains several theaters, including an outdoor amphitheater.

Or explore Guatemala's distant past at the archeological site of Kaminaljuyu. Buried beneath two of Guatemala city's most commercial neighborhoods, Zones 7 and 11, are the ruins of this ancient Mayan civilization. Visitors can tour some of the recently excavated land, which archeologists describe as one of the most historically significant sites in the Americas. Afterward, head to the Museo Miraflores in Zone 11. This museum details the history of the residents of Kaminaljuyu and contains a large assortment of authentic Mayan artifacts.

Next, take in some of Guatemala's natural beauty at the Jardines Botanico, or botanical gardens. Located in Zone 10, this lush collection of indigenous and exotic plants represents the first botanical garden in Central America. Afterward, spend some time shopping at one of Zone 10's many malls, such as the popular La Pradera, Los Proceres and the newer Oakland Mall.
