Cheap Flights to Faro

The small Portuguese city of Faro is a truly one-of-a-kind vacation destination. Located on the country's southern coast near the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, the city experiences a subtropical climate with temperatures ranging from the 60s to the 80s in the summer. This warmth attracts many seasonal visitors from throughout Europe, who come to relax and party on the region's miles of beautiful sandy beaches. In fact, the area's eastern coast sports a variety of beaches, each catering to a different type of traveler. For example, Vale de Lobo is home to an acclaimed golfing facility, while Barril caters to gay tourists. Faro is situated next to the Ria Formosa lagoon, a system of barrier islands. About 105-square miles of the lagoon is devoted to a National Park, which during the spring and fall is a popular stopping place for migratory birds. Meanwhile, locals use the lagoon to farm seafood, making it a critical element of the local economy. The Faro cityscape rivals its beaches in beauty. Much of the architecture is influenced by the area's early Moorish settlers. Its historic center is well preserved, featuring quaint cobblestone streets and small shops and cafes. During the summer, the city plays host to a number of special events and celebrations. Visitors can find luxury Faro hotels and resorts throughout the southern Portuguese coast. The Faro Airport (FAO) serves the Faro region. It is at its busiest during the height of the vacation season, which lasts from about March through October. Although no carriers provide direct flights from the U.S., you can easily find service to Faro from select international departure cities. For example, you can buy plane tickets from Madrid on Ryanair. Or search for affordable airfare from Lisbon on TAP Portugal. Travelers can also compare flight deals from London on Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, EasyJet, Monarch, Ryanair and British Airways. Other airlines that service Faro include Air Berlin, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, Brussels Airlines, SATA and Norwegian.

Faro Flight Tips

For an even shorter journey, compare airfare to Seville, Spain, which is only about two hours from Faro. Or buy plane tickets to Lisbon and find transportation south to Faro, which is only about 170 miles away.

Quick Travel Guide to Faro

Begin your exploration of Faro and the surrounding coast with a trip to the Old City, the town's central historic district. Buildings here are colored in bright white tones and sport unique architecture that is a blend of Moorish and 18th-century Portuguese aesthetic. One of the top attractions within the city is the Igreja do Carmo. This large church houses a chapel whose walls are decorated with the bones of more than 1,200 monks. Another popular cultural attraction is the Faro Jewish Heritage Center. Established in 1851, this cemetery is significant because it is the only remaining landmark from the first post-Inquisition Jewish presence in Portugal. Today, the center claims more than a hundred graves as well as a museum that houses many artifacts related to the history of the Jewish presence in Faro. The city is also home to a maritime museum that displays a collection of miniature boats and an archeological museum that resides in an old convent.

Faro also has many souvenir and crafts shops that cater to tourists. In the center of town, travelers can purchase baskets, clothing, ceramics and local wines. There is also a market on the Largo do Mercado where locals and visitors alike can mingle and purchase all types of produce. For dining, walk along Rua San Antonio where you'll find a range of restaurants that cater to the fine dining crowd and the budget eater. Popular bites include homemade pastries and fresh seafood.

Because of its status as both a vacationer hotspot and a college town—due to the presence of the University of Algarve—Faro has a vibrant nightlife scene that often has visitors reveling well into the early morning hours. Entertainment options are mixed, from late-night dance clubs to intimate bars.

For some of the most popular tourist draws, you'll have to travel outside of Faro. All along the southern Portuguese coastline, you'll find lavish resorts and beautiful beaches. One of the closest beaches is the Praia de Faro. Located just past the airport, this gently sloping sandy beach stretches for several miles. Because it is so spread out, travelers can always find a spot to sunbathe. Other beach communities in the area include Cabanas de Tavira, Cacela Velha and Manta Rosa.
