Cheap Flights to Elko

The small city of Elko offers visitors a large variety of entertainment options. Located in northern Nevada, the small town claims less than 20,000 residents, making it a relaxing alternative to the big city. The main attraction here is the area's natural beauty. Just north of Elko is the Humboldt National Forest. Covering more than 6 million acres dispersed throughout several Nevada counties, the forest is the largest national forest outside of Alaska. Here, tourists can hike through the wilderness while observing the dazzling array of indigenous plant and animal life. The city also boasts examples of interesting architecture, including the main U.S. Post Office and the Elko County Courthouse, which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Elko is home to a significant population of Basques, nomadic people from Spain and France. Drawn initially to the area during the Gold Rush, the Basques stayed and established a permanent community. Today, visitors can sample their unique cuisine at a number of Basque restaurants or observe their culture at the annual National Basque Festival. Tourists can frequently find Elko hotel deals near one of the city's several casinos. You can compare flight discounts to Elko on Travelzoo's SuperSearch.

Reno is more than four hours west of Elko, while Salt Lake City is about three-and-a-half hours east.

Meanwhile, you can compare flights to Reno on American Airlines, American Eagle, Continental, Delta, Horizon Air, Southwest, United and US Airways. If you do fly into one of these cities, check out some of the local attractions. Salt Lake City has a large arts community, while Reno features a vibrant nightlife scene. Quick Travel Guide to Elko

If you are driving to Elko from Reno, make a stop at the Humboldt State Wildlife Management Area. This small state park features beautiful natural areas and hikeable terrain. It's also the home of the Lovelock Indian Caves. Located on top of a high hill, the cave is about 40 feet deep and 160 feet wide. Native American artifacts, dating back as far as 4,000 years, have been found within the cave. Many of these artifacts are on display at the Humboldt Museum in the small town of Winnemucca, another stop along the way to Elko.

If you are driving to Elko from Salt Lake City, stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats State Park located within five miles of the Utah-Nevada borer. Stretching more than 30,000 acres, the park features a seemingly unending white plain of earth and salt. Because of its unique flatness, the site is popular among high-speed auto racers. In fact, some specially designed vehicles have driven across the white plain at more than 600 miles per hour. Continue driving along Interstate 80 to Wells, Nevada, which features hunting and fishing grounds as well as a nine-hole golf course.

In Elko, you can try to strike it rich like the region's original prospector inhabitants at one of the town's casinos. Many of the casinos have adjoining or nearby accommodations as well as on-site entertainment and dining options. The Commercial Casino is famous for the 10-foot tall stuffed polar bear on display in its lobby.

Elko is also home to the Western Folklife Center. The regional nonprofit is host to the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. This weeklong event celebrates life in the rural West through the art of poetry. The event draws thousands of cowboys, cowgirls, poets, musicians and scholars from around the country. The center also hosts regular events, workshops and exhibitions.

Venture outside of Elko to rural Nevada. Beside the amazing wilderness that awaits you, you will find dozens of ghost towns. Relics from the Gold Rush boom of the 19th century, these abandoned towns have become some of the top tourist attractions in this fairly uninhabited part of the country. You can also drive about an hour north of Elko to the Humboldt National Forest, located right along the Nevada-Idaho border.
