Quick Travel Guide to Delhi

Delhi has a tremendous number of historic sites, monuments and landmarks. In fact, you will probably be challenged to see everything in one trip, which is why it is important you plan ahead.

Begin your adventure in Old Delhi, the city's historic hub. This area once was home to India's elite. Grand mosques and large mansions filled this former city center. Now, many of the majestic buildings stand as monuments, preserving the memory of a time gone by. Venture down Chandni Chowk, the main street within this walled part of the city. Here, you will find many historic residences lining both sides of the street. This is also the site of Delhi's most famous mosque, Jama Masjid. Built in 1650, the mosque is just as impressive today as it was nearly 400 years ago. Chandni Chowk is also home to dozens of vendors selling everything from traditional clothing to food to books.

Walk to nearby Khari Baoli and get lost in Asia's largest spice market. Located near the Red Fort, this market has been in operation since the 17th century. In addition to wholesale spices, you can find a mix of nuts, fruits and herbs as well.

Next, head to Connaught Place, one of the largest financial and commercial areas in the city. The area is part of the region known as Lutyen's Delhi, names after the British architect who designed much of India's buildings during the time of British rule. The district is known for its variety of restaurants, many of which feature cuisines from around the world. Connaught Place is also known as one of the best shopping districts in the city. The area boasts affordable Indian bazaars as well as upscale stores.

If you want to grab a cocktail, check out at the upscale bars in New Delhi. Many of the city's nicest venues are located in the luxury hotels near Connaught Place. Most bars in the city close shortly after midnight. However, you can always venture just a little outside Delhi to the neighboring suburb of Gurgaon where bars remain open well into the night.
