Quick Travel Guide to Dayton

Nicknamed the Gem City, Dayton offers visitors a treasure trove of historical sites and cultural attractions. Many of these center around the city's role in aviation history. Serving as the hometown of the famous Wright Brothers, Dayton has preserved much of the inventors' belongings. One of the most patronized attractions is the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Made up of several sites throughout the Dayton area, the park contains the Wright Cycle Company building, which in the late 19th century served as one of the locations for the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop. It also claims the Huffman Prairie Flying Field in nearby Fairborn. This 84-acre pasture is where the Wright brothers perfected their airplane as well as their flying skills.

Tourists can also learn about the history of aviation beyond just the Wright Brothers. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and it is the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world. One of the most visited displays in the museum is the National Aviation Hall of Fame, which includes dozens of inductees whose efforts advanced the field of flight.

In addition to the various aviation-themed attractions, Dayton also has a vibrant arts scene. The Dayton Art Institute is a 60,000-square foot museum that contains more than 20,000 objects spanning about 5,000 years. The city also boasts one of the oldest professional dance companies in the U.S., the Dayton Ballet.

Get some fresh air at the Five Rivers Metroparks. This public park system, which serves the greater Dayton area, spans more than 14,000 acres. In the summer, the parks host weekly cultural events. In the winter, visitors can strap on a pair of skates and glide across the park's ice-skating rink.

Shoppers looking for unique buys can visit the PNC Second Street Market. Located near downtown Dayton, it is the city's largest and oldest public market. Here, visitors can purchase local produce, baked goods, cheeses and other edibles from more than 50 vendors.

At night, head to the Oregon District. Besides showcasing some of the city's earliest architecture, the historic neighborhood boasts an array of entertainment options. Take a stroll down East Fifth Street and stop in one of the bars or restaurants. The area also boasts a movie theater and a comedy club.
