Quick Travel Guide to Cedar Rapids

Considered a center for Iowan culture and arts, Cedar Rapids is a bustling urban area with plenty of activities and attractions to keep visitors entertained. If it's your first time to the city, make sure to visit Mays Island. Inducted onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, this small land mass rests in the middle of the Cedar River. It is home to several buildings, the most prominent of which is the Veteran's Memorial Building. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style, the edifice formerly served as Cedar Rapids' city hall until it sustained extensive flood damage in 2008. The building claims a memorial auditorium and a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Also located on the island is the Linn County Courthouse. The courthouse also sustained water damage during the flood of 2008; however, part of it was reopened later that year.

Next, head to the north river bank to see the city's symbol, the Tree of Five Seasons. The 61-foot stainless steel sculpture, which was erected in 1996, has undergone renovation since the 2008 flooding. Meanwhile, plans are in place to continue to expand and beautify the surrounding plaza.

Cedar Rapids is well known for being the home of famed artist Grant Wood. The prolific painter's most famous work, "American Gothic," is one of the most revered American art pieces of the 20th century. Fans of Wood can tour the artist's home and studio, known as the Grant Wood Studio. Owned and operated by the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, which boasts the largest collection of Wood's work in the world, the modest home is open to the public from the spring through the fall.

If you're traveling with children, plan a visit to the city's Science Station. This interactive science museum, which currently occupies space at the Lindale Mall, includes an Early Childhood Exploration Area as well as restored and classic exhibits from the facility's previous downtown location.

Tourists can also explore the city's unique culture with a visit to the African American Museum of Iowa. The museum strives to preserve, publicize and educate the public on African American heritage and culture in the state. Displays include temporary and permanent exhibits, such as Endless Possibilities, an installation that traces Iowa's African-American heritage from its origins in Africa through the Civil War, the Civil Rights struggle and beyond. In addition, the museum's collection contains more than 2,000 historical artifacts.
