Quick Travel Guide to Casablanca
Begin your trip to this Mediterranean hub for commerce and nightlife in the Place des Nations Unies. This grand plaza is the modern city's center and boasts a number of luxury hotels. It is also the original site of the main market of Anfa, a 7th-century city that eventually grew into Casablanca.
From here, head north to the Old Medina. Enter through the district's walls and be welcomed into a sprawling, dense urban area with narrow, winding streets and street merchants on all sides. Here, you'll find traditional Moroccan goods for sale such as hookahs, pottery and leather items. Within the walls of Old Medina, you'll find Rick's Cafe, named for the bar in the film Casablanca. Housed in an attractive mansion, Rick's Cafe serves up tasty seafood in a richly decorated setting. Live piano music can be heard six nights a week, and requests are always welcome.
Next, head north of the Old Medina to the King Hassan II Mosque. This grand mosque is one of only two such Moroccan religious buildings open to non-Muslims. Guided tours of the mosque's interior are offered several times a day.
