Quick Travel Guide to Budapest

Both sides of the Danube River, Buda and Pest, offer tourists unique sites and cultural attractions. Begin your journey with a visit to Castle Hill in the Buda region of the city. This massive historical site is home to the Buda Castle, which was first built in 1265. Along Castle Hill's cobblestone street, you will also find some prime examples of medieval architecture, including Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance houses. You will also find the 700-year-old Matthias Church, an extraordinary ornate building that houses the Ecclesiastical Art Museum.

Next, head east to downtown Pest. Here, along the Danube River, you can appreciate picturesque views of the cityscape. One of the most eye-catching buildings in this area is the Parliament Building. This large neo-gothic complex is the third largest Parliament building in the world. Guided tours of the Parliament building's interior are available. Nearby, you can visit another acclaimed attraction, The Great Synagogue. This massive temple is the second largest synagogue in the world and the largest in Europe. The facility houses a small museum.

Those looking to relax in one of Budapest's spas have a large selection of baths to choose from. One of the most visually stunning spas is the Rudas Baths, located on the west side of the city. Originally built in 1550, when Turkey occupied Hungary, the bathhouse still retains much of its Turkish aesthetic today, such as its traditional Turkish dome and octagonal pool. Another popular spa is the Gellert Baths. Built in the early 20th century, the complex contains two mosaic-tiled thermal baths, saunas, an outdoor wave pool and a grand effervescent pool housed within a spacious Art Nouveau corridor.

For food and nightlife, head to the Pest side of the Danube River. Here, you'll find a mix of affordable wine bars,  cozy pubs and swank lounges. The area known as Raday Utca is densely packed with restaurants, clubs and cafes, making it a great place to explore on foot. Or check out Liszt Ferenc ter, a popular destination for tourists because of its trendy eateries and bars.
