To experience some of the local culture, pay a visit to the Bismarck Arts and Galleries Association. This complex displays photography, art and sculptures by local, regional and national artists. Next, just walk a couple blocks south to the Kirkwood Mall. The enclosed shopping complex houses five major anchor stores, including Target and J.C. Penney. For a bit of Bismarck history, travel east of downtown to the Old Governor's Mansion. Originally built in 1884, the house served as the official governor's domicile for 21 North Dakota heads of state. Various exhibits detail the restoration process and the mansion's history. For another historical outing, visit the North Dakota Heritage Center. Located northeast of downtown near Lions Park, the institution is the state's largest museum.
