Quick Travel Guide to Asheville

Begin your trip to Asheville by taking a tour of the city's iconic architecture. One of the city's biggest claims to fame is that it boasts the country's largest complete collection of Art Deco structures. Architectural tours are available, or you can just explore on your own. One place of interest is the French Renaissance-inspired Biltmore Estate. At 135,000-square feet and claiming 250 rooms, it is the largest privately owned residence in the U.S.  Another popular site is the Art Deco City Building, which sports an octagonal roof that serves as a symbol of the city. The city's churches also sport interesting architecture. Built in 1905, the Basilica of St. Lawrence is considered a national historic place and features the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America.

Art fans will want to head to Biltmore Avenue and Patton Avenue near downtown Asheville. Here, you will find a strip of storefront art galleries. The Blue Spiral 1 gallery presents arts and crafts from Southeastern artists. The Kress Emporium, located in the historic Kress Building, showcases the work of more than 80 regional artists and craftspeople. Another vibrant arts district is located southwest of downtown near the French Broad River. Here, you will find the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas, a school of fine arts devoted to the development of realist artists.

If you're traveling with children, take the kids to the Health Adventure, a science museum dedicated to promoting health awareness. The museum features a variety of interactive exhibits and frequently hosts special events. Or check out the Western North Carolina Nature Center. This living museum showcases flora and fauna indigenous to the southern Appalachian region.

No trip to Asheville would be complete without an outdoor excursion. Visitors can explore the nearby Pisgah National Forest. Located just 26 miles from Asheville, the forest covers more than 510,000 acres of mountainous terrain. Hiking through the lush park is a popular pastime. If you'd rather stay closer to the metro area, head north of downtown to the city's Botanical Gardens. Located adjacent to the University of North Carolina-Asheville, the park, which offers free admission, features a rich collection of native plants amid picturesque meadows and streams.
