You can easily spend an entire afternoon simply admiring the monuments and public art scattered throughout Accra, so be sure to set aside a fair-weather day for this and bring your camera along. One of the most-visited monuments is the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the final resting place of the beloved Ghanaian President and Prime Minister. Visitors are often moved by the sight of Independence Square and its imposing Independence Arch, which commemorate the nation’s freedom movement.

Among the must-see attractions is the National Museum of Ghana, a remarkably extensive and detailed look at multiple aspects of the nation’s history. Ancient archaeological discoveries, exhibits detailing Ghana’s role in the slave trade and well-preserved Ghanaian pottery are some of the museum’s highlights. Another interesting institution is the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre, which may appear at first to be a research library, but which actually contains numerous exhibits detailing DuBois’ life after leaving the U.S. for Ghana. His former home and final resting place are also on the grounds.

Sightseeing and cultural attractions like these may dominate your itinerary, but Accra is a wonderful place to simply shop, dine and relax as the locals do. Haggle with local vendors at Makola Market, or to find hand-crafted souvenirs, browse the booths at the National Culture Center.  For dining and nightlife, take a cab to the suburb of Osu, where you’ll enjoy international cuisine and live music. Osu is also a smart place to look for hotels in Accra that regularly cater to international travelers.
