Scoring a perfect 100 for location in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards in 2012, the enchanting Alchymist Grand Hotel & Spa lies amid the cobbled streets at the foot of Prague Castle. It’s right across from the US Embassy in Mala Strana, a swanky and safe setting that’s only a few minutes’ walk from Charles Bridge.

The historic hotel is formed from four grand houses (parts of which date back to the 16th century), which have been restored in an over-the-top baroque style -- both inside and out. Take time out for cakes and homemade chocolates at the Barocco Veneziano Café alongside views of the Schönborn Palace, and in the evening there's free wine and cheese tasting in the lobby. For more substantial meals, the Michelin Guide-listed Aquarius Restaurant serves Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, plus a smattering of Czech specialties. The terrace is ideal for al fresco dining in summer and there’s live piano music in the evenings (Thursday-Sunday).

The “small but excellent” Ecsotica Spa (Fodor’s) allows guests to work out beneath Gothic vaulted ceilings and Murano chandeliers, with a swimming pool, a sauna and luxurious treatment rooms. Don’t miss relaxing in the ornate 18th-century Chinese relaxation cabin.

Unique in size and shape, many of the bedrooms feature wooden beams, painted ceilings and 4-poster beds. Family Rooms are split over two floors with two bedrooms, and the larger suites have chandeliers, Persian carpets and oak floors. The signature suite has a particularly impressive bathroom, complete with heated floor, claw-foot tub and separate shower.

From the press:

  • "Prague's most decadent Habsburg days are still on tap at the Alchymist" -- Time Out
  • "Those who prefer quieter surroundings may enjoy the garden across the cobbled lane where you can sit on a Turkish divan and sip mojitos"-- Condé Nast Traveller
  • "Arguably the most opulent, luxurious lodging in Prague" -- Frommer’s
