The award-winning Rothay Manor Hotel in Ambleside was built in 1823, and is a 10-minute walk from Lake Windermere and key scenic spots in England's Lake District. Its exemplary service, location and comfort have made it a consistent Good Hotel Guide Gold Award winner for 35 years.
Famous for its scenery and Romantic literary associations (Wordsworth proclaimed it "the loveliest spot that man hath found", which sums up the sentiments of other famous authors such as Keats, Sir Walter Scott, Austen, Tennyson, Agatha Christie and Beatrix Potter, who lived in the area) -- the Lake District is a must-see for nature lovers. There are plenty of outdoor activities and nearby attractions such as the World of Beatrix Potter -- within a 15-minute drive of the hotel -- and Grizedale Forest and Visitor Centre, as well as Brantwood (John Ruskin's House), which are a 20-minute drive away.
The 2-AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant offers a "range of imaginative dishes" (The AA), and also serves afternoon tea and Sunday lunch. The 19 bedrooms are spacious and have Egyptian cotton bed sheets, a flat-screen TV and a DVD player. Some rooms are wheelchair accessible. Classic rooms are at the side or rear of the hotel with views over the River Rothay towards Loughrigg Fell, or over Ambleside towards Wansfell Pike; front-facing Superior rooms have a balcony or terrace with views across the garden. There are also three large suites, which are perfect for families or those who like a little more space.
Guests have free use of the swimming pool and gym at the Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa, which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
