Built in the early 17th century, Hartwell House & Spa is a "glorious hotchpotch of Jacobean and Georgian" styles say The Times. Set in 94 acres of parkland enclosed by a set of iron gates, the secluded "Capability Brown-inspired grounds" (The Times) house many impressive statues, including an imposing centrepiece of King George III's father, Frederick, Prince of Wales. Its most famous resident was Louis XVIII, the exiled King of France.
Hartwell Spa is less than 100 yards from the main house. It features a pool, a steam room, four treatment rooms and a whirlpool bath, as well as an outdoor hot tub and a well-equipped gym. There are also two all-weather tennis courts.
The main dining room has two AA Rosettes and uses seasonal produce from local farms and Hartwell's own orchards. Hartwell Spa Cafe and Bar offers lighter bites in an informal setting.
Set in the Vale of Aylesbury, the hotel is surrounded by rolling countryside, offering hiking and cycling opportunities. Oxford and Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are both less than 50 minutes' drive away.
A dramatic Gothic hall with a staircase hand-carved with Jacobean figures leads to 30 individually appointed bedrooms. Each room is decorated with antique furniture and fine paintings. An additional 16 bedrooms are available in the Hartwell Court, a converted 18th-century coach house and stables.
