The constantly proffered tea and home made cookies are one of the biggest hits for guests at what Lonely Planet calls “one of Dublin’s best guesthouses” and “a carefully guarded secret”.

Service, too, in this beautifully restored Edwardian property, three train stops from central Dublin in exclusive Ballsbridge, is as personalised and skilful as you would find in Dublin’s best hotels.

Genuine Edwardian furniture in the 25 bedrooms is matched by well chosen art. Four-poster and brass beds fit in with the decorative scheme, as do working ornate Adams fireplaces in the suites. Bathrooms have aromatherapy toiletries and whirlpool spas. Wi-Fi throughout is complimentary.

Afternoon teas and drinks are served in the drawing rooms, where a decent Irish and international literature collection also draws people in. Pre-arranged dinners are taken in the dining room overlooking cricket grounds and large landscaped gardens. Parking is free, and guests have use of the spa at a nearby sister property, Merrion Hall

While a little removed from the action in the city centre (although there’s a Dart train stop right outside for quick transfers into town), most guests welcome the lodge’s seclusion. Many of the embassies are here and it’s also a good base for exploring sights such as the Wicklow Mountains to the south, and stately homes, castles and country villages within a short drive.
