Stanwell House Hotel is an 18th-century former finishing school set on Lymington's high street, half a mile from the New Forest National Park. The town has a wealth of history -- it was once a honeypot for smugglers looking to hoard contraband in nearby caves, and its weekly Saturday market has been running for over 765 years. Today, there is a multitude of white masts in the marina and the "utterly quaint" (Lonely Planet) cobbled lanes are lined with independent shops.
The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, which has a collection of 250 vehicles, is a 15-minute drive away; Buckler's Hard Maritime Museum is 10 minutes' drive from there. Hurst Castle can be accessed via the ferry that runs from Keyhaven every 20 minutes. This coastal fortress, built by Henry VIII, is open daily from late March-October, and at weekends from November-early March. Southampton and Lyndhurst are within 30 minutes' drive.
The 2-AA-Rosette Bistro serves contemporary European fare, using local produce delivered daily from a farm. You can dine al fresco on the terrace or in the "intimate" (The AA) refurbished Burcher & Co restaurant, which serves creative dishes like British tapas. The Drydock bar has a cocktail and malt whisky menu, and a nice selection of wines.
Georgian rooms are on the second and third floors in the oldest part of the property, whereas Garden rooms are more contemporary and are on the ground and first floors. Dogs can stay in some ground-floor Garden rooms for an extra £15 per dog, per stay.
