Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa is just outside the village of Donnington in west Berkshire, and has an extensive list of facilities, including a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, a spa and an on-site 18-hole golf course. It also has four AA Silver Stars, an accolade given to properties offering a superior level of quality in hospitality, service and cleanliness.
The town of Newbury is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel, and is home to Newbury Racecourse. Highclere Castle, which is used for exterior shots of Downton Abbey in the popular ITV drama of the same name, is a 15-minute drive. English Heritage attraction Donnington Castle, a 14th-century castle where Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are believed to have stayed, is a 15-minute walk away.
The "state-of-the art" spa (The AA Hotel Guide 2016) has floor-to-ceiling windows around an 18-metre pool. There's also a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, an aromatherapy room and experience showers. Pre-booked spa treatments are also available.
Golfers are well looked after -- there's an 18-hole course on site and a Grade II-listed Victorian clubhouse with views over the course. There's also a shop selling golfing equipment. It's £25 per person per round and must be booked in advance (payable direct to the hotel).
The 2-AA-Rosette WinePress Restaurant serves "imaginative food complemented by a superb wine list", says The AA, and the Bacchus bar is open daily, offering sharing platters, drinks and meals.
Executive rooms have views of either the golf course or the Berkshire countryside. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.
