Darwin's Townhouse is a late-18th-century Georgian property that underwent a complete refurbishment in 2016 to turn it into a 20-bedroom boutique bed and breakfast in the heart of Shrewsbury town centre.
Located on a quiet street, the hotel overlooks many of the town's Tudor buildings and it's a short stroll from the shops, restaurants and bars of the town centre. The hotel is steps from the River Severn path -- great for a waterside stroll.
Awarded 5-Star B&B status by The AA, the hotel feels like a home from home: the octagonal lounge has a fire, comfy chairs, books, games and a TV, and overlooks the garden. Retreat to the snug (with a fully stocked honesty bar) or head to the large, bright conservatory with views of the gardens. The modern décor is complemented by features such as a stone staircase and original fireplaces.
Breakfast is served in the conservatory from 7-9:30am on weekdays and 8-10am on weekends, using the finest local seasonal produce. Or if you fancy a lazy lie-in, you can order a continental breakfast tray served to your room.
While the restaurant does not serve lunch or dinner, the hotel has two sister restaurants within a short stroll: The Loopy Shrew, serving traditional English cuisine, and Porterhouse SY1, which offers American-inspired dishes. Residents of Darwin's Townhouse get a 10% discount at both.
The 20 rooms are either in the main house or in the garden rooms to the rear of the property. Superior Rooms are more spacious, with super-king-size beds. The AA says the bedrooms are "stylish and comfortable" -- all come with DAB alarm radios with iPod docking stations, tea- and coffee-making facilities, luxury toiletries and free Wi-Fi. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the Garden Rooms.
