The JW Marriott El Convento Cusco is not just a 5-star property in a beautiful location; the hotel itself is a museum, and the patrons get to sleep among ancient history. Guests are greeted in the otherworldly lobby with 6,000 Swarovski sparkling crystal chandeliers that are modeled after sun god Inti and stone from the ancient Incan empire. The hotel was built on top of ancient Incan ruins and sits amid a 16th-century colonial San Agustin convent.
Guests don’t even have to leave the property to get a large dose of culture and history with two hallways dedicated to Peruvian artifacts that were uncovered when they built the hotel and restored the surrounding land. There is a free daily guided tour of the grounds that previous guests say is a must-do to get a better understanding of the antiquity of the property.
The rooms are chic and tranquil with beautiful lighting, lush fabrics, and a subtle and understated luxury. Rooms can look out onto the beautiful courtyard or ancient rock wall. Bathrooms are appropriately lavish with floor-to-ceiling marble, a soaker tub and rain-head shower. The hotel also offers a local coca tea and pumps the rooms with oxygen to help guests acclimate to the high elevation.
As tempting as it may be to not leave the hotel, the surrounding town is just as quaint and fun to explore. The hotel is a short three-minute walk to the main cathedral and Plaza de Armas, which is the center of the Incan Capital, and a 10-minute stroll to the local market and several museums.
