Perched atop a dramatic, flower- and pine-decked cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the enchanting Lokrum Island nature reserve, a popular day excursion from Dubrovnik, this chic 5-star villa-style -- a 2016 Trip Advisor Travellers' Choice award-winner -- is a 31-minute walk (or a 2-minute taxi journey costing £4-£5 (or 40-50 kn [Croatian kuna]) to the ancient walled city. The hotel also offers guests its own complimentary vaporetto boat shuttle to the old town. Don't miss the 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance-Baroque Knežev dvor (Rector's Palace), the former private residence of the rector (city governing official) and now the city's Cultural History Museum. It is worth a visit for its artfully restored rooms and displays of the city's historical artefacts such as coins and coats of arms evoking Dubrovnik's former grandeur as the "pearl of the Adriatic". It also hosts open-air classical music concerts by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra on Thursdays in August.

The hotel seamlessly combines a few features of a typical ancient Croatian villa with sleek contemporary design to create a striking and relaxing ambience. It features 56 rooms with natural-wood furnishings, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs, as well as terraces and living areas with sofas. Upgraded rooms have sea views, and some have whirlpool tubs, separate living areas and outdoor Jacuzzis. There are also two deluxe, private three-bedroom villas with their own entrance and parking. Pets are allowed, and room service is available.
There's a chic rooftop bar serving prosciutto and a selection of local and international wines, with spectacular views of the coastline and old town – ideal for watching the brilliant nightly sunsets; a cozy library lounge; a refined restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine; and an outdoor terrace for casual, al fresco dining in a secluded garden. It also has a high-end spa featuring a large indoor pool, a sauna and wellness treatments, plus a sundeck. Breakfast and parking are free.

When not chilling on the sundecks on the hotel's private rocky beach, you can take a 15-minute taxi-boat from the old harbour to the fascinating, history-filled Lokrum Island (it departs every 15 minutes and costs 35 kn, including admission to the island; the hotel's vaporetto can also be booked for excursions there). Along with its eight sandy beaches (including a naturist beach) and mini-saltwater lake, the island was the former holiday mansion residence of Austrian archduke Maximillian, who left behind a score of wandering peacocks; it also features a deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery and a wealth of exotic botanical plants.
