Chic, fresh and fun, the Allegria Hotel is a true beach escape -- as The New York Times notes, the hotel "wouldn’t seem out of place on South Beach." It’s only 25 miles outside of Manhattan, making it ideal for a weekend getaway or a midweek break -- you can even make the journey by train in an hour. The main attraction here is the beach, but the town’s shops and restaurants are a draw as well and can be reached within 10 minutes on foot.

Long Beach is "one of the best stretches of sand you can find," says Lonely Planet, and at the Allegria Hotel, guests can waltz straight out onto the sand and the two-mile boardwalk -- it’s the only hotel in the area with direct beach access, and you can rent a lounge chair and umbrella on the beach. There’s also a small rooftop pool, open May-September, as well as a large fitness room with ocean views.

Start off the evening with a drink at L’Onda, the hotel’s ocean-side lounge, where there are 50-plus different vintages on the wine list. Atlantica, the sea-themed restaurant (even the light fixtures look like jellyfish), is Zagat-recommended and looks to the water to fill its dishes with oysters, sea bass and lobster.

Large, airy rooms (some with ocean views) have pale wooden floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and blue and white bed linens that nod to the hotel’s seaside position. Bathrooms are especially luxurious -- they are clad in limestone and have walk-in rainfall showers. Suites are even bigger and have comfy corner sofas and soaking tubs.

Getting there

The hotel is half an hour by taxi from JFK Airport or an hour’s drive from Manhattan. From Manhattan, you can also take the Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station to Long Beach Station, which is five blocks from the hotel.
