The White Hart Inn is a characterful 16th-century coaching inn in the Cotswolds village of Winchcombe, 15 minutes' drive from Cheltenham. With only eight bedrooms, this restaurant with rooms makes a cosy setting for a weekend in the country.
The hotel is in historic Winchcombe, once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and now a quiet village with quaint cottages, boutiques and a 15th-century church. It is a good base for exploring the Cotswolds -- the villages of Burton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh are all within a half-hour drive -- and is at the crossroads of the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way walking routes. Sudeley Castle, the former home of Henry VIII's sixth wife Katherine Parr, is less than five minutes' drive from the hotel and Cheltenham Racecourse is 15 minutes' drive away.
The hotel's Wine & Sausage restaurant specialises in classic British dishes, such as pork chops with bubble and squeak, and you can take your pick from seven varieties of sausage -- all served with onion gravy and mash or champ. Ingredients are sourced locally, and there are regional guest ales and Hereford cider available at the bar. There's also a wine shop on site, and you can order afternoon tea from 3-6pm, daily.
The ensuite bedrooms have country-style décor, antique furniture and free Wi-Fi. Lie ins are encouraged with breakfast served until noon, and well behaved dogs are welcome.
Please note: there is currently scaffolding around the rear of the property due to recent building work.
