Opened in June 2015, Inn on the Square is a chic new hotel in Keswick's Market Square. The recent renovation has given the Georgian property a Scandinavian flavour -- think mid-century modern furniture and wintery colour schemes.
Keswick is a pretty market town, "encircled by cloud-capped fells" (Lonely Planet) in the northern Lake District. The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Derwentwater, a 3-mile long body of water surrounded by wooded fells -- you can go on an 8-mile hike around its shores or take a cruise from Keswick pier. It also makes a good base for exploring Borrowdale valley and climbing Skiddaw, a 931-metre mountain to the north.
After a day on the hills, The Back Bar is a cosy family-friendly spot in which to unwind, with a log-burning stove, exposed stone walls and live sports on the TV. It serves regular pub grub, including home-made scotch eggs and burgers. The Front Bar is a smarter, lounge-style space. Stop by for British cuisine, sandwiches, cocktails, and tea and cake from 10am until late. For AA-Rosette dining, there's the Brossen Steakhouse restaurant, which specialises in dry-aged steaks served with sides like roasted bone marrow, beef-dripping chips or truffled mac and cheese.
The hotel's 34 rooms are calm sanctuaries, with Cumbrian-made beds and rain showers. Herdwick Rooms are sheep themed, while Town Rooms have bright geometric prints. Coffee, tea and chocolate biscuits are provided, and Wi-Fi is free.
Dogs are welcome in the bars and bedrooms (£10 per room, per night).
